Internal Family Systems & Expressive Arts

IFS is founded on the principle of multiplicity, the idea that everyone's personality is composed of parts, or subpersonalities. Parts help make us who we are, enable us to express our innate gifts and live fully in the world.

But when parts have had to take on extreme roles (or burdens) in the face of psychological, physical, or spiritual trauma, problems can arise in our lives.

The IFS model also holds that every person has a core Self and has access to Self Energy, an energy source that is unassailable, infinitely resourced, and has all that is needed to heal psychological damage, including the most impactful trauma. When Self comes into relationship with parts, burdened parts can be healed and transformed, and Self can become a lifelong, primary attachment source for the whole system, providing guidance, safety and a spiritual anchoring that allows parts to express their innate skills and wisdom in a Self-led manner. This framework lends understanding to the complexity of the psyche providing an elegant model for healing pain & trauma.

Each group participant is assigned homework~ choose a part/parts and create an Expressive Arts Project.

Group members have at least 4 weeks to work on your expressive arts project at home. Each member will have an opportunity to present their project to the group.
